After playing college baseball, he was selected by the San Francisco Giants with the third pick in the first round of the 1986 professional baseball draft. He made his major league debut for the Giants in 1987, mostly at shortstop but also at third base. Furthermore, he alternated between shortstop and third base until the 1990 season. He then moved to third base for the Giants, where he led the National League in runs batted in with 122 and was named to the National League All-Star team.
